What is long pepper? (and how it differs from black pepper)

Long pepper is one of those herbs that sits a little outside its name. It is in the same plant genus as black pepper, but it isn’t a long version of a black peppercorn. It’s a different species with a different fruit form, a sharper character, and a distinct historical and Ayurvedic identity.

The botanical name is Piper longum. The plant is a perennial climbing vine native to South India and Sri Lanka, growing through other vegetation by means of small adventitious roots. Its fruits are not the round peppercorns of Piper nigrum but dense cylindrical spikes – catkins, technically – composed of tightly packed tiny fruits fused around a central core. Spikes are typically harvested unripe, sun-dried, and used either whole or ground into powder.

The Sanskrit name Pippali appears constantly across classical Ayurvedic texts – more often than black pepper, in fact. Roman and Greek physicians knew long pepper before they knew black pepper; it travelled west along the spice routes earlier and was the dominant pepper in Mediterranean cooking until black pepper displaced it in the medieval period.

Which parts of the plant are used?

The dried unripe fruit spike is the part used in modern supplements and traditional formulations. The root (called Pippali Mool in Ayurveda) is also used in classical preparations and has a slightly different application profile, though it is less common in modern supplements than the fruit. The leaves and vines are not used medicinally.

Until roughly 1000 CE, long pepper was the more important pepper in European cuisine and herbal medicine. The shift to black pepper happened gradually as Indian Ocean trade routes opened, partly because round peppercorns were easier to ship and store than fragile fruit spikes. Active compounds

Long pepper shares some of its phytochemistry with black pepper, but with notable differences. Piperine, the alkaloid responsible for the pungency of both species, is typically present in long pepper at higher concentrations – often 4 to 5 percent of dried fruit by weight, sometimes higher. This contributes to the herb’s reputation in classical Ayurveda as more strongly warming than black pepper.

The compound that distinguishes long pepper most clearly from black pepper is piperlongumine – a pippali-specific alkaloid that has been the subject of significant preclinical research over the past decade, particularly in laboratory studies of its biological activity. Ancient and classical period

Long pepper appears prominently in the Charaka Samhita as Pippali and is described as a key ingredient in numerous classical formulations. It also appears in early Greek (Hippocrates, Theophrastus) and Roman (Pliny the Elder) medical and culinary texts, where it was the dominant pepper before black pepper supplanted it.

Medieval period

The Bhavaprakasha and other medieval Ayurvedic texts described long pepper in detailed pharmacological terms, including the classical Pippali Vardhamana Rasayana protocol – a graduated dosing regimen used as a daily rasayana. In Europe, long pepper gradually gave way to black pepper through the medieval period.

1500s – 1900s

Niche persistence

Long pepper became a niche herb in Western markets but remained essential in Indian and South-East Asian Ayurvedic and culinary traditions. British colonial physicians catalogued it in detail.

1950s – 1990s

Chemistry

Indian and Japanese researchers characterised long pepper’s alkaloid profile through the second half of the 20th century. Piperlongumine was identified and structurally characterised, opening the way for the modern preclinical research era.

The strongest body of evidence supports long pepper’s traditional role as part of multi-herb formulations rather than as a standalone intervention – which aligns closely with how classical Ayurveda has always used it.

Long pepper has been consumed in several forms.

Suitability and cautions

Long pepper is generally well tolerated at culinary doses. At supplemental doses, the same considerations as for black pepper apply, often more strongly given long pepper’s higher piperine content:

  • People taking medications metabolised by liver enzymes – including some statins, certain antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and chemotherapy agents – should consult a GP before supplemental use, as piperine can alter their plasma levels.
  • Pregnant women should avoid supplemental long pepper; culinary use is generally considered fine.
  • People taking anticoagulants should consult a GP, as piperine may have mild effects on platelet function.
  • Long pepper is more strongly heating than black pepper in classical Ayurvedic theory; people with high pitta or inflammatory tendencies may find it aggravating.
