What is black seed?

Black seed is the small, angular, jet-black seed of Nigella sativa – a slim annual flowering plant native to a band of land stretching from the eastern Mediterranean across the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent. The plant grows up to 30 centimetres tall, with finely divided leaves and pale blue or white flowers that mature into capsule-like fruits containing many small seeds. It is in the Ranunculaceae family – the buttercups – which is unusual among medicinal seeds and unrelated to most other culinary or Ayurvedic seeds.

The herb has many regional names: Kalonji in Hindi and Urdu, Habbatul barakah (“the blessed seed”) in Arabic, Cernuța in Romanian, Schwarzkümmel in German. In English the most common names are “black seed” and “black cumin” – although the latter is misleading: Nigella sativa is botanically unrelated to true cumin (Cuminum cyminum, family Apiaceae), and the two are easily told apart by appearance and aroma.

Which parts of the plant are used?

The seed is the only part used in traditional and modern preparations. Seeds are typically harvested when the seed pods are fully mature and dry. The leaves, flowers, and other parts of the plant are not used medicinally and contain compounds that are not appropriate for ingestion in significant quantities.

Active compounds

The most studied compound in black seed is thymoquinone, a quinone-class compound found primarily in the seed’s essential oil fraction. Thymoquinone has been the subject of hundreds of laboratory and animal studies investigating effects on inflammation markers, oxidative stress markers, and metabolic endpoints. The seed oil typically contains 0.4 to 2.5 percent thymoquinone by volume, with concentrations varying significantly between cultivars, growing conditions, and processing methods.

Beyond thymoquinone, the seeds contain nigellone (a polymerised form of thymoquinone), nigellidine, a range of sterols (including beta-sitosterol), saponins, and a fatty fixed oil rich in linoleic acid and oleic acid. The aromatic essential oil contains additional compounds including p-cymene, alpha-thujene, and carvacrol.

c. 1500 BCE – 600 CE

Ancient Mediterranean and South Asia

Black seed appears in archaeological records across Pharaonic Egypt, Hellenistic Greece, and the Indian subcontinent. The seed is mentioned by Pliny the Elder (1st century CE) as melanthion, and in Old Testament texts as ketzah. Indian Sanskrit medical texts described it as a digestive and warming herb. Despite the depth of usage across cultures, the consistent picture is of a strongly aromatic seed used both as a culinary spice and a folk remedy.

Unani-Tibb tradition

Black seed became a foundational ingredient in Unani-Tibb, the Greco-Arab medical tradition that flourished across the Islamic world. It was named Habbatul barakah (“the blessed seed”) and is mentioned in classical Hadith texts. Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine (1025 CE) described its applications in considerable detail. In medieval South Asia, Ayurvedic and Unani practitioners both used it.

How to read this evidence base

Black seed has one of the broader meta-analytic evidence bases of any traditional herb. Effect sizes are typically modest but reasonably consistent across endpoints, particularly in metabolic and cardiovascular markers. The biggest practical caveat is heterogeneity: trials use everything from raw seed to standardised oil to thymoquinone-isolated extract, and dose ranges are wide. As ever, larger long-duration trials in Western populations remain limited.

Black seed is generally well tolerated at culinary doses, but supplemental use warrants caution in several groups:

  • Pregnant women should avoid supplemental black seed; high doses have been associated with uterine effects in animal studies.
  • People taking warfarin or other anticoagulants should consult a GP; black seed may have mild blood-thinning effects.
  • People taking immunosuppressants should consult a GP; black seed may have immunomodulatory effects.
