Amla, also called Indian gooseberry, is the small green fruit of Phyllanthus emblica, a deciduous tree in the Phyllanthaceae family. It is one of the most ancient and most used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenative) and famous for being one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C in the plant kingdom. Modern research has investigated its effects on lipid markers, glucose markers, antioxidant activity, and digestive endpoints. Amla is also one of the three fruits in the classical formula Triphala. As a food supplement in the UK, it is regulated under food law, not as a medicine.

What is amla?

Amla is the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica, a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. The tree grows 8 to 18 metres tall and bears small, pale-green to yellowish-green spherical fruits roughly two to three centimetres in diameter. The fruits have a translucent, fibrous flesh and a single hard seed at the centre. Their flavour is famously intense – simultaneously sour, astringent, bitter, sweet, and pungent, missing only salty among the six classical Ayurvedic tastes.

The English name “Indian gooseberry” reflects the fruit’s superficial resemblance to European gooseberries, but the two are unrelated botanically. The Sanskrit name amalaki is most often translated as “the sustainer” or “the nurse,” reflecting the herb’s long-standing classification as a Rasayana – a tonic for general resilience and longevity.

The fruit is the only medicinal part.

Which parts of the plant are used?

The fruit is the only part used in modern Ayurvedic supplements and clinical research. It is harvested when fully mature (typically late autumn or early winter in India), then either pressed for juice, dried whole, or processed into powder or standardised extract. Drying must be done carefully – amla’s vitamin C content is heat-sensitive, and poorly processed dried fruit can lose much of it.

The leaves, bark, and roots are used in some traditional and folk applications but are uncommon in modern supplement formulations.

Amla is one of the three fruits that make up Triphala – alongside Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Triphala is one of the most prescribed formulas in classical Ayurveda, and amla is often considered its dominant ingredient.

Active compounds

Amla’s phytochemistry is dominated by two distinct categories of compounds. The first is its vitamin C content. Fresh amla fruit contains anywhere from 600mg to 1,500mg of vitamin C per 100g of flesh, depending on cultivar, season, and ripeness – putting it among the highest natural plant sources known. Notably, amla’s vitamin C appears to be unusually heat-stable for a plant source, partly because it is bound up with tannins that protect it from oxidation; whether this stability fully extends to dried supplement forms remains an area of ongoing research.

The second category is the polyphenols – a complex group dominated by gallic acid, ellagic acid, and the amla-specific compounds emblicanin A and emblicanin B. These are believed to account for much of the herb’s antioxidant activity in laboratory assays. Amla also contains chebulagic acid, corilagin, and a range of flavonoids.

Most modern standardised extracts are characterised either by total polyphenol content, total tannin content, or measured emblicanin content.

A brief history of amla

Amla is one of the most consistently used herbs across the entire span of Ayurvedic history.

c. 1000 BCE – 600 CE

Vedic and classical Ayurvedic period

Amla appears in the Atharva Veda, one of the oldest Indian religious texts, and is described in detail in the Charaka Samhita (compiled c. 200 BCE – 200 CE). Charaka classified it among the Vayasthapana (age-defying) herbs and as one of the principal Rasayana ingredients. The Sushruta Samhita described medicinal preparations and topical uses.

Medieval Ayurvedic period

Amla’s status was cemented by its inclusion in two of the most prescribed formulations in classical Ayurveda: Triphala (the three-fruit formula) and Chyawanprash (a herbal jam containing dozens of ingredients with amla as the dominant component). The Bhavaprakasha described amla in granular detail.

1700s – 1947

Colonial era

British colonial botanists catalogued the tree extensively, including in Sir George Watt’s Dictionary of the Economic Products of India. Amla pickles and preserves were a noted feature of regional Indian cuisine, but Western pharmacology paid little attention.

1950s – 1990s

Chemistry and early research

Vitamin C in amla was characterised in detail through the mid-20th century, and the unique heat stability of its ascorbate became an active research question. The emblicanins were isolated and characterised in the 1990s, providing a non-vitamin-C explanation for some of the herb’s observed antioxidant activity.

2000s – present

Modern research

Human clinical research on amla has expanded since the early 2000s, with trials investigating cardiovascular markers, glycaemic markers, antioxidant activity, and gastrointestinal endpoints. Amla has become a recurring ingredient in Western Ayurvedic supplement ranges and in formulations marketed for general wellness.

Traditional Ayurvedic context

In classical Ayurveda, amla is described as cooling, light, and – unusually for a sour fruit – pacifying to pitta. Most sour foods are considered pitta-aggravating in Ayurvedic theory; amla is the canonical exception, balanced by its other tastes (astringent, bitter, sweet, pungent) and its overall cooling potency. It is described as tridoshic.

Modern research

Amla has been studied in a moderate number of human clinical trials and a substantial body of in vitro and animal research. Most human trials are small (40–120 participants) and short (4–12 weeks), and the most consistent measured outcomes are in cardiovascular and glycaemic endpoints. Lipid and cardiovascular research

Akhtar et al. (2011, Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine) studied 60 adults with hyperlipidaemia given 500mg of amla extract daily for 21 days. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were measured. Antony et al. (2008, Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry) studied 60 adults over 6 months in a longer-duration trial measuring lipid and glycaemic endpoints. Usharani et al. (2019, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity) studied 59 adults with metabolic syndrome over 12 weeks, measuring endothelial function alongside lipid markers.

Glucose research

Usharani et al. (2013, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity) studied 56 adults with type 2 diabetes given amla extract daily for 12 weeks. Endpoints included fasting glucose, postprandial glucose, and HbA1c.

Antioxidant research

Chen et al. (2008, Phytotherapy Research) studied 38 adults given amla extract for 56 days, measuring serum antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation markers.

Reviews and syntheses

Khan (2009, Pharmacognosy Reviews) provided one of the most comprehensive published syntheses of amla’s phytochemistry and traditional uses. Variya et al. (2016, Pharmacological Research) reviewed the herb’s pharmacology in detail, including the role of emblicanins and the broader polyphenol profile.

How to read this evidence base

Amla’s clinical trial base is reasonably broad in topic but generally small in sample size and short in duration. Most positive trials use either dried fruit powder, fruit juice, or polyphenol-standardised extracts at varying doses; the lack of dose standardisation across trials makes meta-analysis difficult. Independent Western trials remain limited. The picture across the evidence base is consistent with a broad-spectrum nutritive and antioxidant herb rather than a targeted single-system intervention.

Forms and preparations

Amla has historically been consumed in many forms.

  • Fresh fruit–eaten whole, often with salt or honey to soften the intense sourness; the most traditional household form
  • Amla churna–dried fruit ground to powder, taken with water or honey
  • Amla juice–fresh-pressed or bottled, often diluted with water
  • Triphala–the three-fruit classical formula in which amla is one ingredient
  • Chyawanprash–a traditional herbal jam with amla as the dominant ingredient
  • Capsule–standardised fruit extract; the most dose-accurate option for daily use

Doses used in clinical research range from 500mg of standardised extract to 3g of fruit powder per day, taken with food, over study periods of 4 to 24 weeks. These figures describe what has been studied in research – they are not dietary recommendations.

Suitability and cautions

Amla is generally well tolerated, but a few cautions apply:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare practitioner before use of supplemental amla.
  • People with bleeding disorders or taking warfarin or other anticoagulants should consult a GP before use; amla may have mild blood-thinning effects.
  • People with severe gastric reflux, peptic ulcers, or hyperacidity may find amla’s sourness aggravating; start at low doses and consult a GP if symptoms occur.
  • People with diabetes on glucose-lowering medication should monitor blood sugar; amla may further lower glucose markers.
  • Amla is high in oxalates; people with a history of oxalate kidney stones should consult a GP before regular use.
