BLACK SALT

HISTORY

Name: Black salt, also known as Kala Namak, is a type of rock salt that has been used in South Asian cooking for centuries. It is primarily found in the Himalayan region of Pakistan and India.

In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, black salt is believed to have medicinal properties and is used to treat a variety of health conditions such as indigestion, constipation, and heartburn. It is also believed to have cooling properties and is used to alleviate heat-related health problems.

Black salt is made by heating regular salt in a furnace for 24 hours with various Indian spices such as harad seeds, amla fruit, and cumin seeds. The heat and spices give black salt its characteristic color, flavor, and smell.

ACTIVE COMPOUNDS

Sodium chloride

Black salt is primarily composed of sodium chloride, which is the same compound found in regular table salt. However, black salt may contain lower levels of sodium than regular table salt, making it a potentially healthier option for those who need to limit their sodium intake.

Iron sulfide

Black salt also contains iron sulfide, which gives it its characteristic sulfurous odor and flavor. Iron sulfide has been found to have potential therapeutic effects on several conditions, including anemia and cardiovascular disease.

Magnesium

Black salt contains magnesium, which is an essential mineral that is important for several bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function, heart health, and bone health.

Potassium

Black salt contains potassium, which is an essential mineral that is important for several bodily functions, including blood pressure regulation, heart health, and muscle function.

Kala Namak is often touted for its potential to aid digestion and improve gut health. This is because it contains small amounts of minerals like potassium, magnesium, and iron, which are important for healthy digestion. However, more research is needed to determine the extent of these benefits.Additionally, some people believe that Kala Namak can help to lower blood pressure and improve respiratory health.
